What is The Phase Leading Operation of Generator?

The generator is a mechanical equipment that converts other forms of energy into electrical energy. It is driven by a water turbine, steam turbine, diesel engine or other power machinery, and converts the energy generated by water flow, air flow, fuel combustion or atomic Nuclear fission into mechanical energy and then transfers it to the generator, which converts it into electrical energy. Generators have a wide range of applications in industrial and agricultural production, national defense, technology, and daily life. The so-called phase leading operation of generators refers to the stable operating state of generators emitting active power and absorbing reactive power.

When the generator is running in phase, four main issues should be noted:

First is a decrease in static stability.

The second is that the end leakage magnetic field causes an increase in the temperature of the stator end.

Thirdly, the voltage of auxiliary power decreases.

Fourthly, due to the decrease in terminal voltage and the increase in stator current of the generator without changing the output power, it is easy to cause overload.

(1) During phase leading operation, due to the generator's phase leading operation, the internal potential decreases and the static reserve decreases, resulting in a decrease in static stability.

(2) Due to the output power of the generator P=EdU/Xd · Sin δ, During the leading phase operation, both Ed and U decrease, and with the output power P unchanged, the power angle δ Increasing also reduces the level of dynamic stability.

(3) During phase leading operation, due to the armature reaction of the auxiliary magnetic field, the end leakage of the generator increases, causing an increase in the temperature of the stator end. The end leakage flux of the generator is the combination of the end leakage flux of the stator winding and the end leakage flux of the rotor. During leading phase operation, due to the phase relationship between the two magnetic fields, the synthesized magnetic flux is larger than during non leading phase operation, resulting in an increase in the temperature at the end of the stator.

(4) The reduction of auxiliary power voltage, which is generally introduced from the generator outlet or generator voltage bus. During phase leading operation, due to the reduction of generator excitation current and reactive power flow reversal, the terminal voltage decreases and the auxiliary power voltage decreases.

Diesel Generator Power Ratings: Standby vs Prime vs Continuous

Diesel generator sets are commonly used in a variety of sectors due to their dependable performance and high efficiency. They can be used for emergency power supply in the event of a power cut or used in places without connection to a power grid. When selecting a diesel generator for your home or business, you need to consider many factors, such as generator’s ratings. In this article, we’ll explain the three basic rating types - standby, prime, and continuous in diesel generators. ISO-8528-1:2018 defines basic generator set rating categories based on four operational categories: Emergency Standby Power (ESP), Prime Power (PRP), Continuous Power (COP) and Limited-Time Running Prime (LTP). Read on and learn the application of power ratings for engines used in generating sets. Standby Power Rating Standby Power(ESP) is used to supply emergency power when the external power supply is interrupted, such as power outages. Standby power rated generators can supply reliable electricity as t...

What Should You Pay Attention to in Routine Maintenance of Diesel Generator Sets

In modern society, the stability of power supply is directly related to the operation efficiency of enterprises and people's quality of life. Diesel generators have become an indispensable backup power supply or main power source in various industries due to their high efficiency, durability and reliability. However, to ensure the smooth operation and optimal performance of the generator sets, regular maintenance is essential. Here is what you need to pay attention to in the routine maintenance of diesel generators. Keep your generator clean It’s important to keep the generator’s exterior and the generator room clean. Regularly remove any dirt, dust, or debris that may accumulate to on the generator’s surface. This is not only for the sake of beauty, but also for the smooth operation of the unit. Cleaning the generator’s exterior, air intake vents, exhaust outlets and generator room can effectively reduce the risk of generator overheating. In addition, check if the connection bol...
