What Should You Pay Attention to in Routine Maintenance of Diesel Generator Sets

In modern society, the stability of power supply is directly related to the operation efficiency of enterprises and people's quality of life. Diesel generators have become an indispensable backup power supply or main power source in various industries due to their high efficiency, durability and reliability. However, to ensure the smooth operation and optimal performance of the generator sets, regular maintenance is essential. Here is what you need to pay attention to in the routine maintenance of diesel generators.

Keep your generator clean

It’s important to keep the generator’s exterior and the generator room clean. Regularly remove any dirt, dust, or debris that may accumulate to on the generator’s surface. This is not only for the sake of beauty, but also for the smooth operation of the unit. Cleaning the generator’s exterior, air intake vents, exhaust outlets and generator room can effectively reduce the risk of generator overheating. In addition, check if the connection bolts and cable joints of the unit are tight periodically to avoid accidents caused by loosening.

Keep the diesel engine in good condition

Diesel engine serves as the heart of a diesel generator set, so it’s vital to maintain this part. The diesel fuel and engine oil serve as the blood that is necessary for the operation of the engine. Thus, ensure that you use high quality fuel and engine oil and change the oil and oil filters regularly to ensure that the engine components remain properly lubricated. Also, check the fuel level and oil level frequently and top them up when necessary. Ensure the fuel lines are free from obstructions.

Check the cooling system

The cooling system is a key part of your diesel generator set, and its normal operation is very important to the heat dissipation effect of the unit. Thus, you should ensure that the cooling fans and radiator works properly. Regularly cleaning the radiator to prevent the blockage of dust and dirt and ensure the heat dissipation effect of the unit. Check the coolant level and viscosity at regular intervals. Top it up or change the coolant when necessary. In addition, check if the antifreeze is sufficient regularly and replace it when necessary to ensure the normal operation of the generator set in the cold.

Battery maintenance

Diesel generators rely on batteries to start and battery failure can lead to the starting failure of the generator set. Thus, you need to periodically check the battery’s voltage and electrolyte level periodically and ensure that they are in good condition. Avoid battery damage caused by excessive discharge or long time no use of the battery. If the battery is damaged, replace it timely to ensure that the generator set can be started when needed.

Check the generator’s safety devices

Diesel generators require specific safety devices and protective measures to guarantee safe operation. Safety devices, such as overload protection, low oil pressure shutdown and circuit breakers, can guarantee both the safety and efficient operation of your diesel generator. Regularly check the performance and sensitivity of each safety protection device to ensure that it can work properly. If there is any problem with the safety devices, please repair or replace them timely. In addition, it’s also necessary to perform a regular load testing. Connect your generator to a load bank to test the generator under various load conditions. Make sure it can handle its rated capacity and performance in emergencies.

In short, regular generator maintenance is essential. You need to regularly clean and inspect the diesel generator, check the fuel level and oil level, inspect the cooling system, batteries, safety devices, etc. Some maintenance tasks should be performed each time you use the generator, some can be conducted over weeks, months or years.

What Is the Difference Between Electric Motor and Electric Generator

An electric motor is an electrical machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. Most electric motors operate through the interaction between the motor's magnetic field and winding currents to generate force. In certain applications, such as in regenerative braking with traction motors, electric motors can be used in reverse as generators to recover energy that might otherwise be lost as heat and friction. An electric generator operates in the reverse direction, converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. Electric generator can be divided into various type, open type, silent type, trailer type, portable type and container type, etc. Electric generator is mainly composed of diesel engine & alternator. Electric generator set is mainly composed of engine, alternator, control module, and common base. Electric generator :- Electric generator is a type of machine which converts mechanical input (energy) into electrical output (...

Engine Fault Code Messages - Volvo Penta Engine

Volvo Penta Engine Fault Code When a malfunction has occurred and the diagnostic system has generated one or more fault codes, these are read out differently depending on the equipment used. Please refer to “Fault code messages”. If the system indicates that a fault code has been set: 1 Cut engine speed to idle, or shut the Volvo engine off. 2 For DCU/DU Read the fault code from the display, please refer to Reading fault codes via the DCU or Reading fault codes via the DU. For CIU press the diagnostic button and read the fault code, by observing the flashing of the diagnostic lamp. Refer to Reading fault codes via the diagnostic lamp, CIU. 3 Look up the fault code in the Fault Code Register chapter and take the recommended measures. Reading fault codes via the DU (Display Unit) Depending on the severity of the fault the text, either WARNING! or ALARM STOP (a buzzer sounds) will be shown on the display 1 Press any button to come to the fault list. The f...
