In general, when the load of a diesel generator set is 80% of the rated load, the fuel consumption is normally at its minimum. If the load increases, the fuel consumption will rise. The fuel consumption of a diesel generator set is directly proportional to the load. However, if the load is lower than 20%, it will have an impact on the diesel generator set. Not only will the fuel consumption of the unit increase significantly, but it may even damage the generator set.

Therefore, to reduce the fuel consumption of a diesel generator, the unit can be operated at around 80% of the rated load. Running at a low load for a long time will actually increase fuel consumption and may even damage the unit.
