Fault Analysis and Precautions of Diesel Generator Set Starting Motor

Last week, our company's after - sales department received a repair call. The starting motor of a diesel generator set purchased from our company two years ago couldn't rotate. Our company immediately sent Technician Zhang to conduct maintenance. This kind of fault of the diesel generator set was a piece of cake for the experienced Technician Zhang. After his treatment, the problem was solved on the same day.

The starting motor of a diesel generator set is also called a starter motor. Technician Zhang from Dingbo Power introduced that there are generally two situations for the failure of a diesel engine's starting motor to rotate. One is that the action sound of the electromagnetic switch's engagement can be heard, but the starting motor doesn't rotate. The reasons may be insufficient battery power, poor contact in the starting circuit, or a fault in the starting motor itself. The other is that the electromagnetic switch doesn't engage and the starting motor doesn't rotate. In addition to the above reasons, it may also be related to faults in the starting switch circuit, the electromagnetic switch, or the DC motor.

Fault Cause Analysis of the Starting Motor (Starter) of Diesel Generator Sets

1.Check if the starting motor relay is working.

2.Check if the transmission gear of the starting motor can mesh with the flywheel ring gear of the diesel engine.

3.The starting motor engages, but the diesel engine cannot rotate or rotates weakly.

4.The diesel engine has started, but the starting gear cannot disengage, making a shrill noise.

5.Check if the battery power is insufficient.

6.Check if the battery temperature is too high.

7.Check if the battery case is deformed or the seal is cracked.

Precautions for Using the Motor

Don't start the motor for a long time: If the motor is started for too long at one time, the battery will discharge a large amount of electricity for a long time, which can easily cause the battery plates to bend. Excessive discharge can easily cause sulfation of the plates, rendering the battery useless.

Don't increase the voltage for starting: To increase the motor speed by blindly connecting two batteries in series to supply power to the motor. This not only easily causes the motor to overspeed, generating centrifugal force and accelerating the damage of the bearing bushes, rotor, and stator coils. Moreover, due to the different technical conditions of the two batteries, the good battery will charge the bad one, which can easily damage the good battery.

Don't increase the capacitance for starting: Connecting two batteries in parallel to supply power to the motor doubles the current, generating a large amount of heat. This can easily cause damage and malfunctions to the starting switch, motor contacts, starting wires, rotor, and stator coils.
