Choosing between Single Phase and Three Phase Diesel Generatorsiesel Generators

Generators are more commonly used in our daily lives compared to other machinery. For example, many people choose to install a generator for water pumping during home decoration to deal with short - term water supply shortages. When buying a generator, we often hear about single - phase diesel generators and three - phase diesel generators. However, many of us don't understand the terms "three - phase" and "single - phase". I often hear our salespeople say that when asking customers whether they want a "three - phase" or "single - phase" generator, customers usually choose the three - phase one, thinking that it must be more useful than the single - phase one. But is that really the case? In fact, the three - phase generator isn't suitable for all places.

Single - phase power has a voltage of 220 volts, which is the voltage between the phase line and the neutral line. Three - phase power has an inter - phase voltage of 380V among phases a, b, and c, and is used for 380V three - phase electrical motors or equipment. Three - phase power is mainly used as the power source for motors, that is, loads that need to rotate. Since the phase difference between the three phases of three - phase power is 120 degrees, the rotor won't get stuck. Three - phase power is designed to create this "angle"; otherwise, there'd be no need for such a complex power system.

 

Secondly, there are differences between three - phase diesel generators and single - phase diesel generators. Three - phase diesel generators are used in industrial production, with a voltage of 380V; single - phase diesel generators are used for ordinary residential use, with a voltage of 220V.

 

Three - phase power has four wires, including three 220V live wires and one neutral wire. Combining any live wire with the neutral wire gives us the common household electricity, which is 220V. However, for the balance of three - phase power, it's recommended to connect corresponding loads if possible. A diesel generator that can generate electromotive forces with equal amplitudes, equal frequencies, and a 120° phase difference is called a three - phase diesel generator.

 

Three - phase power can provide a more reasonable power source. When used as the power source for a motor, there's no need for anything else; just directly connect the three - phase power to the motor, and it can run. If it's a single - phase motor, a complex device needs to be added to ensure its operation.

 

There are differences. Three - phase power has a voltage of 380 volts, while single - phase power has a voltage of 220 volts. So - called three - phase power refers to three live wires, and the voltage between adjacent live wires is 380V, without a neutral wire. Therefore, three - phase power can only be used when the three - phase loads are the same (for example, a three - phase motor). At this time, since the vector sum of the currents of the three - phase power is 0 (the three - phase powers are at 120 - degree angles to each other, so their sum is 0), there's no need for a neutral wire (equivalent to the neutral line).

 

So, when making a choice, we need to understand our own needs and make a selection based on them. This requires us to learn more about the differences between products so that we can better choose the products that meet our needs.
