Some tips on A Diesel Generator Room Design

As emergency power supply equipment, diesel generator sets play an indispensable role in modern life and production. They can ensure stable power supply in emergencies and keep key facilities running normally. In order to give full play to its role, you must make sure that the room/building you place the generator in complies with all genset room design requirements.

Diesel generator room ventilation system design

Proper ventilation of the generator room is necessary to support the smooth operation of diesel generator and provide an environment for the maintenance/operation personnel so they can work comfortably. The ventilation of diesel generator room is an important part in the design of generator room, especially in a basement environment. Poor ventilation will affect the reliable operation of the generator set.

The exhaust gas of the genset usually is usually effectively discharged through the warm-air pipe to prevent the radiator from conducting heat to the inside of the machine room. And the heat will be removed by the exhaust fan. It’s important to ensure that there is an adequate amount of ventilation airflow be delivered to the generator room. During the operation of the diesel generator, the ventilation volume of the generator room must be at least the sum of the fresh air volume required for the combustion of the diesel engine and the fresh air volume required to maintain the room temperature.

Therefore, critical design parameters such as generator-room temperature, ventilation airflow, ventilation air cleanliness, and air movement must be analyzed during the design process.

Dust removal measures for diesel generator room

If no dust prevention measures are taken in the generator room, the equipment may be damaged. Therefore, while ensuring the ventilation of the generator room, it is also necessary to strengthen the dustproof function. The shutters for air intake and exhaust can be installed to ensure the air quality and air volume of the generator room. Pay special attention to the following aspects:

  1. The installation location of the diesel generator should be well ventilated, and sufficient air intake and exhaust must be ensured. The area of the exhaust outlet should be at least 1.5 times the area of the radiator.

  2. The installation site must be kept clean. Do not mix with chemical reagents to prevent corrosion.

  3. When used indoors, the exhaust pipe of the genset must be guided to the outside, and the pipe diameter should be larger than the smoke pipe diameter of the silencer. When installing pipes, maintain a certain downdip Angle to prevent rainwater from entering. In addition, if the foundation is concrete, the ground needs to be treated horizontally.

  4. The enclosure of the diesel generator should be grounded. It is recommended to install lightning protection devices. Do not connect the grounding to the neutral point of the mains power supply.

Improve the Fire-fighting facilities

A fire alarm system should be set up in the generator room. Fire extinguishing equipment should be configured according to the generator size and capacity and the size of the building. If sprinkler systems have been installed in other areas of the building, the generator room should also be equipped with corresponding sprinkler systems.

The ventilation volume of the diesel engine room is calculated as follows:

If the generator room is located on the ground, ventilation numbers should be no less than 3 times under normal circumstances, and no less than 6 times in the event of an accident.

If the generator room is located in the semi-underground, the normal ventilation should be no less than 6 times, and in the event of an accident, it should reach 12 times.

If the generator room is located underground, the normal ventilation frequency should not be less than 12 times. In addition, the number of ventilation in the oil storage room shall not be less than 6 times. Calculation of ventilation volume after a disaster: The ventilation rate of the generator room must be at least five times.

In a word, meticulous design and management of generator room is the basis to ensure the safe and stable operation of diesel generator sets. Diesel Generator Power Ratings: Standby vs Prime vs Continuous

Diesel generator sets are commonly used in a variety of sectors due to their dependable performance and high efficiency. They can be used for emergency power supply in the event of a power cut or used in places without connection to a power grid. When selecting a diesel generator for your home or business, you need to consider many factors, such as generator’s ratings. In this article, we’ll explain the three basic rating types - standby, prime, and continuous in diesel generators. ISO-8528-1:2018 defines basic generator set rating categories based on four operational categories: Emergency Standby Power (ESP), Prime Power (PRP), Continuous Power (COP) and Limited-Time Running Prime (LTP). Read on and learn the application of power ratings for engines used in generating sets. Standby Power Rating Standby Power(ESP) is used to supply emergency power when the external power supply is interrupted, such as power outages. Standby power rated generators can supply reliable electricity as t...

How to Connect A Diesel Generator to Your House?

Diesel generators are fuel-efficient and reliable, which can almost meet the power needs of any application. If you want to power the whole house during power shortages, it’s a good choice to choose a diesel generator set as the backup electricity supply. But how to connect a diesel generator to your house? Read on and you will find the answer. Options to connect a diesel generator to your home   Keep in mind that never plug your generator directly into the mains, or it will cause back feeding, damage your appliances and be life-threatening for utility workers. Generally, you can choose to connect a generator to your house by using extension cords or a transfer switch. Understanding the difference between them is helpful for you to choose the right type. Extension cords   Typically, extension cords are suitable for smaller diesel generators that used for short term. They require no installation and are cost-effective. If you need to power only some basic appliances such as...

What Should You Pay Attention to in Routine Maintenance of Diesel Generator Sets

In modern society, the stability of power supply is directly related to the operation efficiency of enterprises and people's quality of life. Diesel generators have become an indispensable backup power supply or main power source in various industries due to their high efficiency, durability and reliability. However, to ensure the smooth operation and optimal performance of the generator sets, regular maintenance is essential. Here is what you need to pay attention to in the routine maintenance of diesel generators. Keep your generator clean It’s important to keep the generator’s exterior and the generator room clean. Regularly remove any dirt, dust, or debris that may accumulate to on the generator’s surface. This is not only for the sake of beauty, but also for the smooth operation of the unit. Cleaning the generator’s exterior, air intake vents, exhaust outlets and generator room can effectively reduce the risk of generator overheating. In addition, check if the connection bol...
