Dingbo Power Takes You to Understand the ATS of Diesel Generator More Clearly

In modern times, many business owners generally believe that when they own a diesel generator, in the daily operation and production process, product production or commodity sales will not affect the normal operation of the enterprise due to power cut or power restriction of the power grid. Today, diesel generator are the first line of defense against the harsh weather in the summer hurricane season. However, not everyone knows that when the automatic transfer switch (ATS) is used in combination with diesel generator, the solution can improve the reliability of enterprise power supply to a new level. Today, Dingbo Power will take you understand the automatic transfer switch of diesel generator set. The automatic transfer switch is called ATS .

What is ATS?

Automatic transfer switch (ATS) can automatically switch power from public grid facilities to your standby diesel generator when the power grid is suddenly cut off. The existence of this intelligent automatic transfer switch means that when a power failure occurs, the standby diesel generator will start automatically, without the need for special personnel to watch over or manually start it. In addition, because of its existence, when the power supply of the public grid is restored, the diesel generator does not need to be manually shut down. It will automatically shut down the diesel generator and cut off the power and switch the power back to the public grid.

The working principle of ATS refers to the process of converting one power source to another for power supply through ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch). The working principle is as follows:

1. ATS automatically detects the voltage and frequency of the input power supply. Under normal circumstances, ATS will connect to the main power supply and cut off the backup power supply.

2.When the main power supply fails or experiences a power outage, ATS will automatically detect this situation and immediately convert the backup power supply to the main power supply.

3.When the main power supply resumes normal power supply, ATS will detect the voltage and frequency of the main power supply again and ensure that it returns to normal before disconnecting the backup power supply.

4.If both the main power supply and backup power supply fail at the same time, the ATS will remain on the backup power supply until at least one power supply returns to normal operation.

5.During the entire conversion process, ATS ensures continuous power supply and avoids damage to equipment caused by power interference and voltage fluctuations.

6. ATS can be applied in emergency power supply situations such as uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and generator sets to ensure the stability and reliability of equipment operation.

ATS is usually used in special occasions, such as firefighting, emergency, banks, financial institutions, and other places where power cannot be cut off. In an emergency, once the mains power is cut off, ATS will play its role, automatically start the emergency and switch power to mains power. There is now a clear regulation that in places with dense entertainment personnel, the fire inspection generator set must be equipped with an ATS cabinet. Due to the importance of ATS(automatic transfer switch), its supporting products have been listed as key products by the country for standardization and constraints. So when the customer purchases a generator set, we will inquire about the detailed usage and determine whether the customer needs to add an ATS cabinet. With ATS, the generator set can play its due role in special occasions. Generally, units use diesel generator sets, but ATS is not necessarily required for cost calculation. Some units already have ATS switchgear in their generator rooms, and purchasing another set would be a waste. So, when choosing a generator set, it is important to immediately explain the situation to sales personnel to avoid wasting the selection.

Diesel Generator Power Ratings: Standby vs Prime vs Continuous

Diesel generator sets are commonly used in a variety of sectors due to their dependable performance and high efficiency. They can be used for emergency power supply in the event of a power cut or used in places without connection to a power grid. When selecting a diesel generator for your home or business, you need to consider many factors, such as generator’s ratings. In this article, we’ll explain the three basic rating types - standby, prime, and continuous in diesel generators. ISO-8528-1:2018 defines basic generator set rating categories based on four operational categories: Emergency Standby Power (ESP), Prime Power (PRP), Continuous Power (COP) and Limited-Time Running Prime (LTP). Read on and learn the application of power ratings for engines used in generating sets. Standby Power Rating Standby Power(ESP) is used to supply emergency power when the external power supply is interrupted, such as power outages. Standby power rated generators can supply reliable electricity as t...

What Should You Pay Attention to in Routine Maintenance of Diesel Generator Sets

In modern society, the stability of power supply is directly related to the operation efficiency of enterprises and people's quality of life. Diesel generators have become an indispensable backup power supply or main power source in various industries due to their high efficiency, durability and reliability. However, to ensure the smooth operation and optimal performance of the generator sets, regular maintenance is essential. Here is what you need to pay attention to in the routine maintenance of diesel generators. Keep your generator clean It’s important to keep the generator’s exterior and the generator room clean. Regularly remove any dirt, dust, or debris that may accumulate to on the generator’s surface. This is not only for the sake of beauty, but also for the smooth operation of the unit. Cleaning the generator’s exterior, air intake vents, exhaust outlets and generator room can effectively reduce the risk of generator overheating. In addition, check if the connection bol...

How to Connect A Diesel Generator to Your House?

Diesel generators are fuel-efficient and reliable, which can almost meet the power needs of any application. If you want to power the whole house during power shortages, it’s a good choice to choose a diesel generator set as the backup electricity supply. But how to connect a diesel generator to your house? Read on and you will find the answer. Options to connect a diesel generator to your home   Keep in mind that never plug your generator directly into the mains, or it will cause back feeding, damage your appliances and be life-threatening for utility workers. Generally, you can choose to connect a generator to your house by using extension cords or a transfer switch. Understanding the difference between them is helpful for you to choose the right type. Extension cords   Typically, extension cords are suitable for smaller diesel generators that used for short term. They require no installation and are cost-effective. If you need to power only some basic appliances such as...
