How to Effectively Solve the High Fuel Consumption in Volvo Diesel Generators

We all know that diesel generators are more fuel-efficient compared to gasoline generators, but after using them for a period of time, there will also be an increase in fuel consumption. As a commonly used  Volvo diesel generator, it also has this problem. So, what should we do if Volvo diesel generators consume more fuel? Today, Dingbo Power takes you to know how to effectively solve the problem of excessive fuel consumption in Volvo diesel generator sets.

The increase in fuel consumption of diesel generator sets is due to the following reasons:

1. The genset is worn out. Normal wear caused by long-term use of the engine, or abnormal wear caused by improper maintenance, can cause longitudinal pulling marks on the cylinder liner of the diesel engine. The cylinder diameter and piston side clearance exceed the specified values, resulting in a corresponding reduction in the support force of the piston rings and unclean oil scraping.

2. There is oil leakage at the connection. One of the main reasons for the excessive leakage of diesel generators is the oil leakage at the connections between the engine body and the gear compartment cover, as well as the large plate, rear cover, and cover on one side of the running wheel.

3. Worn valve guide

How to Effectively Solve the High Fuel Consumption in Volvo Diesel Generators

Solution to high fuel consumption of Volvo diesel generators:

1. Timely cleaning

(1) Regularly remove some minerals or impurities that have settled at the bottom of the fuel tank after use. If not cleaned regularly, it will affect the normal operation of the plunger and fuel injection head, causing inaccurate fuel supply time, uneven fuel supply, poor fuel atomization, and other phenomena, resulting in an increase in fuel volume.

(2) Timely remove carbon deposits. During the combustion process of a diesel engine, high temperatures are generated in the relevant components, resulting in the adhesion of ash carbon polymers to valves, valve seats, fuel injectors, piston tops, etc. Failure to clean them in a timely manner can increase fuel consumption and seriously affect the normal operation of the generator.

2. Correct use

(1) Maintain a certain water temperature during use. The cooling water temperature of the diesel engine is maintained at around 45-65 degrees. If the water temperature is too low, it will cause incomplete diesel combustion and increase the load capacity of the machine itself. Cooling water should not be abused with sewage, muddy water, or rainwater.

(2) Do not overload work. Overload operation causes a considerable portion of diesel fuel to turn into black smoke, which fails to exert its expected effective energy, increases fuel consumption, and also shortens the service life of related components.

(3) Purify the fuel before use. More than half of the faults of diesel generator sets come from the fuel supply system. The method of handling is to let the purchased diesel settle for 2-4 days before use, which can settle 98% of impurities. If you buy it now and use it now, you can place two layers of silk cloth or toilet paper at the fuel tank filler screen.

3. Ensure that the genset does not leak fuel.

(1) When excessive fuel consumption is found, it is necessary to first check whether there is fuel leakage at the connections between the engine body and the gear compartment cover, the large plate on one side of the driving wheel, the rear cover, and the cover. If there is an oil leak, attention should be paid to observing the integrity of the sealing gaskets at each connection part, and any damaged sealing gaskets should be replaced. If the sealing gasket is complete, check if the connecting screws of each part are loose. Use a wrench to tighten the loose bolts to the specified torque.

(2) If the above parts are basically normal and the fuel leakage is located in the frame position, the fuel casing should be inspected. The main inspection area is at the front end of the fuel casing side on the same side as the driving wheel. Due to loose screws on the frame, the driving wheel has long-term friction with the frame angle iron that protects the fuel casing under the pulling of the triangular belt, which will grind the oil casing through and form a gap, resulting in fuel leakage.

Diesel Generator Power Ratings: Standby vs Prime vs Continuous

Diesel generator sets are commonly used in a variety of sectors due to their dependable performance and high efficiency. They can be used for emergency power supply in the event of a power cut or used in places without connection to a power grid. When selecting a diesel generator for your home or business, you need to consider many factors, such as generator’s ratings. In this article, we’ll explain the three basic rating types - standby, prime, and continuous in diesel generators. ISO-8528-1:2018 defines basic generator set rating categories based on four operational categories: Emergency Standby Power (ESP), Prime Power (PRP), Continuous Power (COP) and Limited-Time Running Prime (LTP). Read on and learn the application of power ratings for engines used in generating sets. Standby Power Rating Standby Power(ESP) is used to supply emergency power when the external power supply is interrupted, such as power outages. Standby power rated generators can supply reliable electricity as t...

How to Connect A Diesel Generator to Your House?

Diesel generators are fuel-efficient and reliable, which can almost meet the power needs of any application. If you want to power the whole house during power shortages, it’s a good choice to choose a diesel generator set as the backup electricity supply. But how to connect a diesel generator to your house? Read on and you will find the answer. Options to connect a diesel generator to your home   Keep in mind that never plug your generator directly into the mains, or it will cause back feeding, damage your appliances and be life-threatening for utility workers. Generally, you can choose to connect a generator to your house by using extension cords or a transfer switch. Understanding the difference between them is helpful for you to choose the right type. Extension cords   Typically, extension cords are suitable for smaller diesel generators that used for short term. They require no installation and are cost-effective. If you need to power only some basic appliances such as...

What Should You Pay Attention to in Routine Maintenance of Diesel Generator Sets

In modern society, the stability of power supply is directly related to the operation efficiency of enterprises and people's quality of life. Diesel generators have become an indispensable backup power supply or main power source in various industries due to their high efficiency, durability and reliability. However, to ensure the smooth operation and optimal performance of the generator sets, regular maintenance is essential. Here is what you need to pay attention to in the routine maintenance of diesel generators. Keep your generator clean It’s important to keep the generator’s exterior and the generator room clean. Regularly remove any dirt, dust, or debris that may accumulate to on the generator’s surface. This is not only for the sake of beauty, but also for the smooth operation of the unit. Cleaning the generator’s exterior, air intake vents, exhaust outlets and generator room can effectively reduce the risk of generator overheating. In addition, check if the connection bol...
