How to Handle High Voltage Installation Safely

Handling High Voltage Safely

A high-voltage installation requires two key elements to be safe: adequate insulation according to the voltage level, and physical isolation measures to prevent accidental contact. Of course, the installation must also meet the National Electrical Code and any local building codes that apply.

To ensure continuous safety, the insulation should be tested at regular intervals; damaged insulation increases the risk of an arc fault, threatening personnel and equipment. Also, insulation deteriorates faster when exposed to extreme temperatures and chemical agents. Testing is performed with a device called a megohmmeter, which applies a test voltage to insulation to measure its performance. The difference with a conventional multimeter is that the megohmmeter applies a much higher test voltage, which is suitable for high insulation levels.

Transmission and distribution lines use much higher voltages that homes and businesses, precisely because they need to carry large amounts of power. A low-voltage transmission line would be prohibitively expensive and very impractical, requiring many miles of large conductors.

Voltage is stepped up at power plants to a suitable level for transmission, and then stepped down by substations for distribution.

Pole transformers perform the final step down for residential and commercial use.

Industrial users often step down the transmission voltage with their own substations, due to their high demand for electricity.

To achieve an installation that is both safe and efficient, the best recommendation is getting professional electrical engineering services from the start of the project. They can specify the most suitable voltage for every appliance and piece of equipment, with the corresponding electrical protections.

Baudouan Weichai 1530KW Diesel Generator Set 16M33 Series Engine

Weichai is the earliest enterprise in China to develop and produce generator sets, with a production history of over 60 years. It mainly produces land - based and marine generator sets, including diesel - type and gas - type units. Weichai's M33 series engines include 6M33, 12M33, and 16M33 diesel engines. These are high - power high - speed diesel engines independently developed by Weichai based on the mature product platform of Baudouin's M26 series in France. The development of this series of models fills the gap in Weichai's high - speed diesel engines for power generation in the 500 - 1530kW power range, enabling effective competition with foreign brands. The M33 series Weichai engines inherit and carry forward the advanced product development and design concepts of the French Baudouin M26. They are benchmarked against international advanced engines, effectively avoiding various design defects. The product development emphasizes high reliability and low emissions. Th...

How to Connect A Diesel Generator to Your House?

Diesel generators are fuel-efficient and reliable, which can almost meet the power needs of any application. If you want to power the whole house during power shortages, it’s a good choice to choose a diesel generator set as the backup electricity supply. But how to connect a diesel generator to your house? Read on and you will find the answer. Options to connect a diesel generator to your home   Keep in mind that never plug your generator directly into the mains, or it will cause back feeding, damage your appliances and be life-threatening for utility workers. Generally, you can choose to connect a generator to your house by using extension cords or a transfer switch. Understanding the difference between them is helpful for you to choose the right type. Extension cords   Typically, extension cords are suitable for smaller diesel generators that used for short term. They require no installation and are cost-effective. If you need to power only some basic appliances such as...

What Should You Pay Attention to in Routine Maintenance of Diesel Generator Sets

In modern society, the stability of power supply is directly related to the operation efficiency of enterprises and people's quality of life. Diesel generators have become an indispensable backup power supply or main power source in various industries due to their high efficiency, durability and reliability. However, to ensure the smooth operation and optimal performance of the generator sets, regular maintenance is essential. Here is what you need to pay attention to in the routine maintenance of diesel generators. Keep your generator clean It’s important to keep the generator’s exterior and the generator room clean. Regularly remove any dirt, dust, or debris that may accumulate to on the generator’s surface. This is not only for the sake of beauty, but also for the smooth operation of the unit. Cleaning the generator’s exterior, air intake vents, exhaust outlets and generator room can effectively reduce the risk of generator overheating. In addition, check if the connection bol...
